Foods to avoid during High Blood Pressure is very important to know for any one suffering from high blood pressure. Some of the most important foods that you should avoid or take in minimum quantity during high blood pressure are mentioned below.

High Blood Pressure is always a health problem which worries many people. It acts as a silent killer. It attacks people suddenly and comes into picture ones person start to face various severe health hazards like stroke, heart attack, kidney failure, blindness and many more. It is to worry when the systolic rate goes beyond 140 and the diastolic rate goes beyond 90. One of the main reasons for High Blood pressure or hypertension is improper/unhealthy food which people take. Excessive high pressure helps in hardening of arteries which leads to severe problems.

Though there are lots of treatments available in market still it is better to have proper food habits so that blood pressure may remain in control. There are some prime reasons for high blood pressure:

  • Unhealthy food habits
  • Excessive amount of sodium in daily diet
  • High consumption of alcohol
  • Fatty food
  • Food containing High calories

Below mentioned is the list of foods which should be avoided during high blood pressure and why it should be avoided.

List of foods which are to be avoided:

Sodium i.e. salt

Excessive amount of salt carries huge amount of sodium which will preferably increase the amount of water in human body which create issue for heart to pump out pure blood. Doctor advises to increase amount of potassium in daily diet to cut off the harmful effects of sodium.

High fatty foods are avoidable such as:

  • Whole milk
  • Doughnuts
  • Ice creams
  • Chocolate
  • Butter
  • Margarine
  • Cheese

All kind of fatty foods are to be avoided as these foods carry lot of trans-fats which are very harmful for heart. Saturated fats increase heart diseases.


High consumption of alcohol damages the human heart. Alcohol specially damages the artery walls which lead to severe heart attacks.

Red meat

Red meat carries lot of germs and extra calories which are unwanted for a healthy heart. Though it’s tasty but it will be better to avoid as much as possible. Red meat contains hydrogenated oil which is harmful for human heart.

Fast Foods

Fast foods such as French fries, doughnuts, fries, noodles etc carry lot of extra oil and huge amount of sodium which are harmful for high blood pressure.

Frozen foods/readymade foods/processed foods

All kinds of frozen food and readymade foods contains huge amount of sodium and fat.


Sugar carries huge amount of calories which creates health hazards. So it will be better to avoid various kinds of sweet dishes and extra sugar in tea and coffee.

Avoiding the above mentioned foods will help people to have a stable blood pressure. And for the patients who already suffering from High Blood Pressure cutting off the above mentioned food from their daily diet will help them to reduce their blood pressure level.

Healthy food habits

As mentioned earlier healthy food habit is extremely necessary in maintaining good health. Incorporation of green vegetables such as spinach, potato, carrot, kale etc, fruits such as banana, apple, orange, dry fruits like date, raisins etc, dairy products like yogurt, low skimmed milk, fish like tuna and salmon and egg will be of great benefit. Foods those are rich in potassium, fiber, magnesium and calcium is necessary to reduce high blood pressure.

It is not only the food habit which helps you to have a hazard free life. Regular exercise, weight loss and proper healthy life style are also necessary to have the blood pressure in control.
